
Course Objectives: This symposium is intended for physicians, pharmacists, nurses and allied healthcare professionals who provide care to patients on anticoagulants such as warfarin, low molecular weight heparin, aspirin and other anti-thrombotic agents. Participants who attend this course should be able to: • Become aware of recently published, potentially practice-changing information relevant to the diagnosis treatment or prevention of thromboembolism • Gain familiarity with the risks and benefits of adding anti-platelet therapy to chronic warfarin • Appreciate the unique challenges associated with the prevention and treatment of thromboembolic disease during pregnancy • Understand the need to adjust and or monitor certain anticoagulant therapies when treating special populations (e.g. patients with obesity, renal insufficiency, etc). • Become familiar with the latest information relevant to making decisions about how long a patient suffering VTE should be treated • Gain awareness of the advantages and limitations for various diagnostic strategies in patients with suspected DVT or PE • Be introduced to novel anticoagulant agents currently in development • Learn the latest recommendations for the diagnosis and treatment of heparin-induced thrombocytopenia • Explore the advantages and disadvantages of treating patients with PE entirely out-of- hospital • Be introduced to the Kaiser Permanente model of anticoagulant care • Take note of strategies available for the treatment of bleeding patients who have received antithrombotic agents • Become familiar with the latest information relevant to weighing the risks and benefits of anticoagulation for patients with atrial fibrillation • Understand the important relationship between cancer and venous thrombosis |
